Designed In Excel
Back in the day I didn't know how to use photoshop and spent most of my time deep in spreadsheets. Inspired by Anni and Josef Albers I started designing patterns in Excel.
Made By Hand
It's good to have a hobby. Back when I didn't have one I taught myself to sew and started making bow ties, trousers and waistcoats.

Lossy Lossless is a series images dealing with loss of quality, context and purpose.
Quality: The images feature portraits of Abraham Lempel and Jacob Ziv, two of the three people responsible for the Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) lossless data compression algorithm. Developed between 1978 and 1984 it is now widely used since becoming part of the GIF image format in 1987. The portraits are are passed through various image processing apps which intentionally discard data resulting in degraded and often abstract images.
Context: Context: The images feature snapshots of conversations and statements posted in the comments section of YouTube and Instagram. Often described as the the 'worst cesspool of the internet' these forums are a veritable primordial soup of emotional outpouring from genuine human interaction, wistfully emotional statements and the inevitable rage and spam. Most of these comments will never be read by anyone and even fewer will be read by the person at whom they are directed. Placed out of context we see them for what they are, a random lottery of human experience. The one exception is QWERTYUIOP which is deemed to be the contents of the first e-mail ever sent in 1971. No record of these first e-mails exists.
Purpose: The images take the form print adverts or posters with a rigid template. Where advertising communication has a defined purpose and message these images can create confusion or be interpreted by the viewer to give a new and unexpected meaning. The logo, usually the most important part of any advert, is lost behind an indecipherable font of glyphs. The viewer understands implicitly how to read an advert with image, headline and logo however these skills are not valid here. An adverts purpose can be said to be to direct someone to buy something however there is nothing to buy, these ads have no purpose.
